Bunion Basics: Managing Bunions and Exploring Treatment Options

Bunions aren't always painful, but they can still cause discomfort when your favorite shoes don't fit anymore. As the condition progresses bunions can become inflamed and painful on their own, but the good news is we offer a variety of advanced treatment options for dealing with bunions. You can learn more by reaching out to Dr. My Hoa Kaas and Dr. Jay Ryan of Virginia Foot and Ankle Center, with an office consultation.

The Basics

A bunion is a large bump that forms on the side of your foot at the big toe joint, it is often accompanied by other symptoms like pain, redness, and swelling.

The deformity can become larger over time and can lead to other foot problems as it progresses. Early treatment can help reduce the impact of these symptoms and can prevent the condition from worsening.

Managing and Treating The Condition

Changing the shoes you wear can be the easiest and most effective way to slow bunions from becoming more severe and manage symptoms. Over-the-counter products to treat bunions can also help reduce discomfort and reduce pressure on the affected area, but they cannot reverse the condition.

Your podiatrist can prescribe custom orthotics to improve support and correct alignment problems, which is especially helpful if there are structural issues with your feet.

Your doctor may also suggest physical therapy and at-home exercises to improve the strength and flexibility of your feet, which can improve their overall health, as well as help with bunions.

But to eliminate a bunion, either because it's become a severe condition or because you want it removed, then your doctor will typically suggest a surgical approach, as there is no other way to reduce or remove it. Thankfully we offer the newest available options to correct this deformity with a fast or immediate return to weight-bearing, without needing any crutches (or other device) to help walk. Minimally invasive options (MIS, pecacplasty) are commonly performed by our team, and offer very little visible scar. Additionally, Lapiplasty (A version of Lapidus procedure) is also used for the most severe of bunions.  Dr. Ryan and Dr. Kaas are some of the very few surgeons who are board certified and have achieved additional specialtized certification to perform these procedures.
